Nei Dan, also known as Inner Alchemy or Jindan (which translates to “golden elixir”), is an ancient practice involving a combination of esoteric teachings and various physical, mental, and spiritual exercises.
Practitioners aim to extend their lifespan and cultivate a spiritual body that is believed to persist beyond death. This practice is deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy and integrates elements from several disciplines:
-
External Alchemy (Waidan): Theories from the traditional practice of alchemy are adapted for internal use.
-
Correlative Cosmology: This includes the concept of the Five Phases, which are wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Each is associated with different aspects of nature and existence.
-
Yijing Emblems: The practice incorporates symbolism from the ancient Chinese divination text, the “Book of Changes.”
-
Medical Theory: Traditional Chinese medicine principles are applied to enhance the practitioner’s health.
The core of Nei Dan practice involves cultivating the “Three Treasures”:
-
Jing (Essence): The basic material of the body, which can be refined into Qi.
-
Qi (Breath or Vital Energy): The active principle that forms part of any living entity and can be transformed into Shen.
-
Shen (Spirit): The spiritual power that can be nurtured to achieve immortality.
In Nei Dan, the human body is metaphorically viewed as a cauldron where these treasures are refined and balanced to improve well-being and pursue spiritual enlightenment. The ultimate goal is to return to the primordial state of unity with the universe, signifying an attainment of immortality.
Classes are provided online, on request as private session, and soon in-person in Singapore.
